Why we serve…

We decided to serve through CFCA for many reasons.

  • For many years, both of us have had an interest in serving the poor. For Annie, this interest grew out of the examples set by family and friends working at CFCA. For Bart, this interest comes from his Catholic upbringing and his belief that all human beings deserve the opportunity to lead full, dignified lives. We expect to learn a great deal about ourselves and about life from those whom we serve.
  • We decided to volunteer in another country because there is much need in the developing world and because we enjoy the adventure of meeting new people and learning about different cultures.
  • We chose to volunteer through CFCA (the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging) not only because of our positive experiences with the foundation, but also because we strongly agree with its mission and core values. We are attracted to the CFCA ideal of walking with the poor.
  • Through volunteering, we hope to grow spiritually both as individuals and as a couple. In past travels, the faith of those we met often renewed our own faith and we hope that our experiences as volunteers will do the same.
  • Finally, we are volunteering at this stage in our lives because it is the ideal time to do so. As a young couple with no children, we are in a position to dedicate our time and talents to serving the poor without being limited by significant obligations in the U.S.

  1. I think what you guys have done is amazing! I want to be in your shoes after college, it has always been a dream of mine to do something related to this like the Peace Corps plus it is a way to travel & see the beauty of the meaning of life! Also learning another language & being able to use it for a long period of time is worthwhile, I really want to be able to do that as well. Your blog was interesting to read too.
